Studies on the Teratogenicity of Recombinant Bovine Somatotrophin(BST)

Abstract
A teratogenicity test was carried out in Spargue-Dawley rats and New Zealand white rabbits which had been subcutaneously treated with bovine somatotrophin(BST), at dose levels of 0.01§·/300g/day, 0.1§·/300g/day, 1§·/300g/day from day 7 to day 17 of gestation period in rats and 0.0033§·/§¸ B.W., 0.33§·/§¸ B.W. and 3.3§·/§¸ B.W. for 13 days from day 6 to day 18 in rabbits.
In rats, two-thirds of the pregnant female rats in each group were sacrificed on day 21 of gestation and their fetuses were closely examined. The remaining dams were allowed to litter naturally and the postnatal development of off-springs were nat observed.
In rabbits, the pregnant female rabbits in each group were sacrificed on day 28 of gestation and their fetuses were closely examined. No changes were observed in all aspects of parameters between groups treated with BST and negative control group in rats and rabbits.
Therefore, it was concluded that bovine somatotrophin have no effects on parturition, lactation arid postnatal growth and no teratogenicity in rats and rabbits.
